Neither as cumbersome as Skype nor as expensive as TeamSpeak, Discord is a streamlined, lightweight and attractive way to communicate with teammates in online games. "I'm a security freak and things like this egregiously irritate me … Finding out Discord has permissions and the ability to see what I'm doing is incredibly unnerving.".
Whenever you load up a game, Discord will recognize it immediately, even if you haven't given it permission to access your Blizzard or Steam accounts. You can disable these notifications, but you can't stop the program from keeping a list of every game you play while it's open. To be perfectly honest, I initially dismissed this complaint as a simple case of a user who neglected to read a program's Terms of Service. But the truth of the matter is that the Terms of Service part often contains important information about the permissions and privileges a program requires in order to run.
I will explain if someone can find your IP and collect your personal information through Discord in this post. Discord masks users’ IP by redirecting their activities through a remote server without unauthorized access. Discord follows various precautions to avoid any chance of leaking it’s users’ info out on the web.
Check out our separate post on how to Fix Discord Screen Share No Audio Problems. That means all your activities, such as calling, chatting, and streaming, are relayed to other users through Discord’s servers first and then to the other end.
Discord uses a client-server architecture for all user activities, including voice and text communication. So, your IP is kept securely locked down and out of sight from any immoral person, which means you’re safe from DDOS attacks. Again, all image and link preview people post are proxied through our system, which means your IP address is double safe. Quickly fix Discord No Route Error by following our epic guide. In Discord, after verifying your account, it will require your confirmation via email if there are any further log-in attempts from different IPs than your usual one. It’s a pretty handy feature lacking in most popular social media platforms.
It requires you to authenticate your log-ins by entering different codes available on a separate device to ensure additional security of your account. Also, Discord servers can require their moderators to enable the 2FA, preventing any bad guys from getting into an admin’s account and spoiling the user’s experiences. It offers the Streamer Mode, which automatically detects when you open OBS or XSplit apps for streaming and hides your sensitive information within Discord’s UI.
So, in conclusion, I’ll say using Discord is pretty safe than most of the social communication platforms in my eyes. Also, when you can get a VoIP-based communication platform offering far better voice and video call quality than any other similar app, it’s hard to bargain and discourage it’s use.
Fortunately, I’ve found some ways that’ll provide you with additional safety while using Discord and protecting your personal information. Also, check out our separate post on how to fix Discord high CPU usage on Windows.
But, remember one thing, Discord uses the User Datagram Protocol, and it only connects with proxy servers that use UDP. It’ll take you to an IP-grabber website that logs your IP address and expose you to the bad guys. Discord will protect your privacy as long as you’re within their platform but, once you click on any suspicious link that grabs IP addresses, you’re exposed to the bad guys.
Check out the easiest way to fix Discord entry point error. Scroll down and click on Advanced under App Settings Section on the left pane. Right-click on the toxic person’s username, message, server name, and click on copy ID.
The only way for someone to find your identity on Discord is to post screenshots with personally identifiable information or something like it.
Discord automatically selects a server region through which to route your voice communications. You can also change the server region mid-call for direct-message voice chats, but this feature is only available on the desktop version.
So, you can follow the steps below to change the server region in the Discord app or on the website, regardless of which platform you have. To improve the quality of voice chats, it’s probably best to choose a location as close as possible to you and the others on your server.
You can also change the server region in the Discord app on Android, iPhone, or iPad. To start, open the Discord app on your smartphone or tablet, and then access the server.
Tap the hamburger menu at the top left to access the channel list. To do this, start a new Discord voice or video call in your “Direct Messages” list.
Disclaimer: Some pages on this site may include an affiliate link. Discord is convenient for chatting with friends, family, and coworkers, but without a VPN, you might be a victim of cyberattacks.
For this reason, you should take the extra steps to secure your internet browsing and make it more difficult to track you down. We’ll also answer some Discord frequently asked questions.
Discord comes with some good security features that can prevent IP leaks and DDoS attacks. People without access to the second method won’t be able to use your account for malicious purposes.
To access Discord, you’ll have to change your IP address. The exact steps will differ, but the idea is shared across the board.
The best VPNs allow you to connect to thousands of locations, which makes you even harder to track. On Mac, you can follow similar steps as you would install a VPN on a PC. Note that you need to download the Mac version of the desired VPN, as the Windows installer won’t work. Macs are generally more secure than Windows PCs, but they aren’t immune to cyberattacks, so you should also invest in a VPN service to protect yourself.
No matter what OS your computer is running on, getting a VPN for it is very important. Since it’s tied to your location, hackers can track you down with a simple search. Just like Mac OS X, iOS is often touted to be more secure than Android. You should get a VPN for your iPhone since it’ll prevent any apps from getting your true location.
If required, purchase a subscription, create an account, and log in. Shady VPN companies also sell the data they gather from your phone.
There are even more options, as developers find it easier to publish their apps on the Google Play Store. You should stick to the paid ones with great reviews, such as our choice for a VPN: ExpressVPN.
Android is easier to hack and get infected with viruses, so you should be extra careful. This means that if you broke rules using your home’s internet, you won’t be able to access Discord anymore. On the new IP address, you should be able to regain access to Discord, albeit with a new account.
Free VPNs often have fewer protections and run ads. You risk leaking your IP address and location without one, and you should always try to prevent hackers and cybercriminals from stealing your information.
This is a spyware feature known as a "process logger" that is generally used to record your program usage habits. The test to prove that Discord logs processes was done again by the writer with procmon on 4/11/2019 with the features: "Use data to customize my Discord Experience" and "Display currently running game as a status message" turned off.
However, when setting the "Display currently running game as a status message" turned on, the behavior described in was replicated. This kind of feature is designed to extract very personal information out of its users (phone numbers). Discord has confirmed in an email correspondence that it does receive government requests for information.
You can read a copy of the email image posted in the source here in case the link there dies. Currently, Discord has been able to consistently raise new investment capital, which is at a level where it could reasonably be covering all of its operating costs. If Discord is not able to satisfy its obligation to its investors, it has a third option- selling user information to advertisers.
Discord is already datamining its users to produce its recommendation system, which means that it is already turning its userbase into extremely valuable, sellable, advertising data. This is incredibly valuable information that Discord can sell if it cannot reach its profit obligations with its current revenue model.
A Discord account is more than just your username and avatar: it’s your digital key to talking the night away with some of your closest friends and favorite communities. That’s why it’s important to keep your Discord account safe and secure, so you can always stay connected to the ones you care about the most.
Read on for a quick explainer of how each of these features protect your account, plus some general security tips at the bottom of this post. These can be used in the event you misplace or lose your authentication app and are unable to receive SMS Backup Codes. It’s optional, but it can help ease your worries if you’re stressed out about relying solely on an authenticator app to sign in each and every time, especially if you plan to switch to a different device down the road.
As a bonus, enabling SMS Backup Authentication helps fulfill requirements for servers that have their Verification Level for members set to the highest. If a community requires a phone number on your Discord account in order to participate, you’ll already be set to go!
Before you verify your login location via email or use your 2FA code to log in, the first thing you’ll type is your password. Even with secondary login verification methods, it’s important to have a secure, unique password that you aren’t using anywhere else. Unfortunately, data breaches happening all over can expose your login information to anyone simply looking to gain access to random accounts across the ‘net, regardless of their intention. You can even save your 2FA codes within some of these password managers, making these apps your one-stop shop to log in to Discord, and any other accounts you may have around the internet.
Most modern browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, and iCloud Keychain for both macOS and iOS can help save your secure password without needing to download another manager. If you’ve got your smartphone on you at all times, there’s a good chance that phone already has both Discord and your authentication app installed.
It’s great for using Discord on a shared computer, or your secure password is dozens of random characters that can take minutes to transcribe. As long as the device you’re using Discord for iOS or Android on has a camera, you can point it at your computer’s screen and use it to sign in to the desktop or web apps — it brings a new meaning to point-and-click!
Use QR Code Login to use Discord without typing your email or secure password on that machine. Even with all of the above, our final piece of advice is important enough to encompass your entire internet presence: never download and run any programs from people or sites you don’t trust! Even with the most secure password and 2FA setup and a real guard dog sitting on your keyboard, running malicious software can cause a whole lot of harm than just one lost account.
To disable geo-tagging of photos, open the camera and then click on the gear icon and set location to “No.” You may have to click the gear icon on several screen layers. This is the most location privacy protective and provides a degree of accuracy that is fine for many uses.
You can turn Location History off for your device or for your Google Account. Alternatively, you can choose which functions and apps to give access to your location.
Also, be aware that some apps will run in the background and can track your location even if you haven’t launched them. For more information, see ConnectSafely’s A Parents’ Guide to Mobile Phones.
Initially, Discord was developed as a free voice and text chat application for the gaming community. The app’s audience saw a significant increase when many professionals worldwide started using Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Discord for business communications during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pro tip: If you are someone who uses Discord for business and want to make sure your information is secure, you should definitely consider using a VPN service such as Clario. With businesses showing a growing interest in Discord, and some even preferring it over bigger platforms such as Slack, it really has created its place in the market as a professional communication tool. Discord enables its users to be active on multiple text and VoIP channels at the same time.
The server hardly ever ‘limits’ your work which is one of the benefits of Discord business use compared to apps such as Slack. Discord provides extensive in-call permission controls that allow users to conduct big meetings with hundreds of participants without any hassle.
Yet, there are tiered membership plans that give access to some additional features such as higher-quality screen sharing and higher file-sharing limits. Discord can be a good alternative to Slack if you are in search of something similar to its channel-based interface, along with capabilities for private chats. Besides, its mobile app is way more efficient and has no known bugs, in contrast to Slack which has known notification issues.
This raises the potential for serious security threats of hackers fishing for your sensitive business information. Since there isn’t any strict check on the type of links and files shared through Discord, it may provide a way for malware and Trojan viruses to spread quickly on your device.
Such viruses may give the administrative rights of your device to potential hackers and you could end up in a vulnerable position. Although there are minor issues with how Discord collects and operates user data, overall, it is a rather safe platform, especially compared to other apps such as Skype, Slack, or Teams. Although there might be some problems with Discord privacy and data security, there are certain steps you can take to ensure your critical business information is not breached. Enhanced Verification Level allows only people with a verified phone number to join a server.
You can also adjust the Discord Privacy settings to manage who can send you friend requests and enable the scanning of your direct messages for explicit content. Another essential and big-picture recommendation to protect your business matters is securing your IP address and browsing anonymously. While it may have all the features for a robust business communication platform, Discord still has a lot of catching up to do regarding privacy-related concerns.
It is really worth finding a trustworthy VPN service so you don’t have to worry about some sensitive information being accessed by a third party. Nearly a thousand companies across the United States and beyond are using Discord app as their primary communication tool, and the number is increasing every month.
